Let's start! 🎉
Most of the times people see only the social media expert that appears every day on the screen of their phones while searching on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter or other social media platforms.
Today, you have the chance to know who is Dorien Morin-van Dam when she is not ‘the social media expert’ that everybody knows.
Dorien: "I am a wife of 30 years, and mom to four kids and four dogs. My biggest passion, and priority, is family! I come from a family of five kids and have 72 first cousins!
I love to cook and bake for my family, and we are active together; we love to run and hike together. I am also passionate about animals, can’t say no to a sweet face; hence we have four dogs. I have been vegan for three years; eating a plant-based diet has had an amazing effect on my well-being."
If you ask me to describe Dorien in a few words I will tell you that she is a social media expert, loves sport and dogs (as you can see on Instagram).
But how would she describe herself? That's why I asked Dorian if she should describe herself in 3 words, what would that be?
Here's what she told me:
Dorien: "Dutch. Runner. Vegan."
Sometimes you have to do a lot of things until you get to do that particular thing that defines you. Before knowing what's your life purpose, you have to try different paths.
"I were a nanny for a decade."
Find out her journey to More In Media.
Dorin: "I am an immigrant to the U.S, and I married young. I was a nanny for ten years, and then a stay-at-home mom, PTA mom, an elder at my church, in charge of children’s programs.
I have always volunteered, and once my kids got older, they joined me. As a family, we traveled a lot when the kids were younger. We lived in Brazil for a few months and in the Netherlands as well, giving the kids international experiences at an early age.
I am a ferocious reader and have been able to pass that passion on to all four of the kids."
Without knowing, all the things you do in life make you acquire knowledge that you do not think you will ever use.
Dorien: "The skills I acquired as a nanny, mom and volunteer have helped me succeed."
Why? Being a nanny and a mother you need patience, having answers to all the questions, being a confident and inventive person, always happy, and a good teacher for the children.
In Dorien's case being a nanny and then a stay-at-home mom helped when she launched her own business, but keep reading, and you will see how funny things work.
Dorien: "When my youngest child started kindergarten nine years ago I suddenly had seven hours per day to myself.
I debated between going to college to get a degree in teaching, and starting a business. I chose to start a business and launched More In Media in January 2011.
I absolutely love what I do and the skills I acquired as a nanny, mom and volunteer have helped me succeed. Those skills include time management, customer service, multi-tasking and… teaching! I am a social media trainer and speaker now. Funny how that worked out!"
Even though she is promoting her work on Instagram and Twitter, talking about favorite social media platform, Dorien chooses Facebook.
Dorien: "Facebook! It’s where my peeps are. I also love Messenger - I sort of see it as a separate platform though."
Tracking the right Instagram or Facebook analytics is essential for growing your audience and becoming more influential on the platform you choose to promote your work. That's why I asked Dorien what her opinion on this topic is.
Dorien: "Sure - although I have to admit I do it well for my clients, not as consistently for More In Media."
Analytics should be reviewed regularly and tracked for not only short term data, but for long term trends.
When I have the opportunity, I ask the experts what their advice is for someone wanting to become a social media influencer.
I love Dorien's answer to this question, and hope you do too!
Dorien: "Be you!
Be yourself, make genuine connections online and offline. Be seen for the right reasons and attend local networking events and industry conferences.
Give. Give again. Give of your time and talents without expecting something in return; people do as you do, not necessarily do as you say because you have to earn their trust first.
We all have a dream, a goal that we set at the beginning of every year, or maybe every month, and we work really hard to accomplish it.
For Dorien, the biggest goal for this year is to publish her book.
Dorien: "That book I’ve been talking about writing. I would really like to get it finished and published." 📖
#9. What do you see as some of the most significant social media trend for 2019?
Who has a better answer to this question than a social media expert?
I asked Dorien this question in another interview at the beginning of the year, but I feel that this question fits very well here too.
Here's what she told me:
Dorien: "In 2019, businesses who are already active on social media need to invest time and money in learning about messaging bots for leads and customer service. I've seen a huge upswing in new bot software, dedicated conferences and usage of bots. If you're on the fence, jump off that fence and jump in to learn and implement."
Finally, I asked Dorien what's the thing that she is most proud of?
Dorien: "My integrity.
I am who I am and I will not compromise, neither push or plead for attention. I love where I am in my life, my family life, my business and I am fortunate to be able to work remotely."
I will end this Insta'rview with an Instagram post that I found on Dorien's account. Probably a lot of people are asking her all the time how many years have she been in business and this was her answer: "I can count my years by my orange glasses!"
Here's the post 👇🏻
